Willingness to Know and Serve God

Parish Desk - Reflections
November 3, 2019October 30, 2019
Know God Serve God

Today’s reflection emphasis the need to always acknowledge the mercy of God and His abundant love in our lives. This mercy and love of God is portrayed in the first reading from the book of Wisdom 11:22-12:2. The first reading reminds us of how merciful our God is and his love for his children. He is always ready to overlook our sins and also give us another opportunity to repent and draw nearer to him. But this God’s mercy is always sufficient for us if we are always willing to know him and serve him in truth & faith. Furthermore, the significance of God’s mercy and love also extends to the Gospel reading in Luke 19: 1- 10. Zacchaeus in the Gospel narrative shows his willingness to know and serve God. Although a sinner, sought the presence of God by inviting him to his house. Zacchaeus puts himself in a position where God can discharge positive transforming action on him. Zacchaeus chooses to put his life in the right order by his willingness to know and serve God despite his shortcoming in life. He therefore invited Jesus to his household and Jesus seized that moment to stay at his house. The lesson deduced from the first and Gospel reading is a clarion call to us Christians and Catholics to be always ready and willing to know and serve God. God loves us, and knows we are sinners. He will never condemn us but give us another chance to draw nearer and to seek Him at all times in truth and in faith. Like Zacchaeus, we all are encouraged to put ourselves in the right disposition to be willing to know and serve God so that He can transform us and turn things anew in our lives. God’s grace is always waiting, watching and sufficient for us. However, the reality on our willingness to serve God posit a question on how willing and ready we are to corporate with the Grace He has made open to us. How ready are we to make that sacrifice to seek Jesus as Zacchaeus demonstrated in the Gospel reading of today?
