The Lord: Defender of the Defenceless

Parish Desk - Reflections
July 7, 2019

Rather than equipping the disciples for “Holy War” against infidels, Jesus “de-equips” them of the requisite travel paraphernalia: “Do not carry a wallet, a travel bag, or sandals; and greet no one along the way.” The absence of standard traveling equipment indicates the total dependence of the disciples on the Sender. No wonder Jesus lamented that the labourers are few because the labour is actually difficult. Imagine travelling without a travelling bag. However, Lambs are protected from wolves and other predators because they are helpless to defend themselves.  It is this vulnerability that is the key to seeing the connection Jesus is making between His followers and lambs.  It is the same connection Jesus is making between us and the world.  We are to proclaim the gospel through witness not warfare especially when we remember that we are emissaries of peace.

Despite the reality of our facing opposition from friends, staunch unbelievers, colleagues, associates, family members and even demons, let us remember that “the hand of the Lord is with his servants” (Isaiah 66:14c). The Lord who has called us is ever faithful. We must also ensure that our innocence does not degenerate into ignorance. We must be prepared, wise, studied, and aware of the dangers that lurk (cf. 1 Peter 5:8). Satan is the enemy of Christ, and unless we go into the battle knowing this, he and his demons will have the advantage over us. Let us instead be wise, yet innocent; shrewd yet blameless. After all, that is who Christ is and what He commissioned us to be.
